It is a modular smartphone project known as Project ARA by Google. It was first originated by Advanced Technology and Product team by Motorola. Google kept the subsidiary of this project and retained ATAP when it sold Motorola to Lenovo.

What is Google’s modular phone?

Just like any other phone, this phone also lets you take pictures, make calls and do a lot of other stuff. But what’s different? It is actually the way this phone is designed. It is not a simple phone but a phone which contains a lot of small modules or unit joined together to form a phone.

This is first ever cell phone designed by Google so it had to go through many difficult phases. But somehow it came out as a phone which is unique in its feature. ARA is the new version of this phone and it is a lot better and convenient. Today I’m going to tell you some super amazing features of this phone along with the way of assembling this device.

Mechanically simple but complex:

Google’s modular phone is mechanically very simple. It doesn’t contain any circuits and wires. With a wireless communication system and magnetic locking mechanism, this phone has a lot of space for modules to be fit in easily. The contact points of the connection of modules are totally protected so you need to worry about any damage while assembling.

Snapping and ejecting modules is fun:

It’s so fun in a geeky way to snap modules into a frame. And what’s more? This phone takes command. You can say “Google, eject camera module” and it will. Cool, right? When you tell the phone to eject camera, all you’ll have to do is to put it on a table facing down and a tiny little latch on the phone’s body will move releasing the module in return. Imagine how fun would it be to watch a camera popping out of the phone. It doesn’t just happen with other phones. You never expect parts of a phone moving on their own.

The battery is hot swap-able:

Have you ever encountered a phone that gives you the ability to change the battery while the phone is working? Obviously not! It may seem impossible to you, right? But it is not. You can simply open up the bottom of the phone while the phone is still working perfectly and can change the newly charged batteries. But how does this happen? It’s really simple. When you remove the battery there leaves enough juice in the in the frame to keep the device running so that you may replace the battery. It doesn’t last for a very long time but it gives enough time to you to do the battery changing work.

Built-in processor:

The processor is already built in the frame. As we all know that the processor or CPU is the brain of the device. The whole system is dependent upon the processor and if it stops working or some error occurs the whole system shuts down. It is quite delicate and the idea of keeping it as a module doesn’t seem to be practical. So Google did the right decision by placing it permanently into the frame as it is not good to let the user insert or eject it. But it also means that you can’t upgrade the system but this is not an issue and the safety of processor is much more important than making it up-gradable. What’s the use of upgrading a processor when it doesn’t work properly? So, Google’s decision of building in the CPU into the frame is absolutely good.

How to assemble the device?

Now let’s talk about assembling the device. There is a frame as I mentioned above that contains six slots for all the modules to be placed and works exactly like any other phone. You can fit the modules neatly and easily into the slots available on the frame. Just be careful that you don’t do any damage to any module by fixing it improperly. You can slide any ARA module into any slot and it will work perfectly fine. It is built with reliable latches that keep the modules safe and protected.
